S1Extended Packaging ReferenceSupplementary Guidelines & Specifications

Extended reference material and detailed specifications for the GFS packaging program. These supplementary sections provide granular implementation details for team members working directly with these assets.

Shrink Sleeve Design Template
Full-coverage shrink sleeve specification for cylindrical and irregular-shaped GFS containers. The sleeve wraps 360 degrees around the product, providing maximum branding real estate. Sleeve Material: PVC or PETG shrink film, 45-50 micron thickness. Shrink ratio: 60-70% for standard cylindrical containers. Print method: rotogravure (runs >10,000 units) or digital (short runs <5,000). Color space: CMYK + 2 spot colors (Cobalt PMS 289C, Tufts PMS 660C). Design zones: Front panel (primary display — GFS logo, product name, hero imagery), Side panel left (nutrition facts, allergen statement), Side panel right (certifications, barcodes, lot code window), Back panel (ingredients, distributed by statement, QR code). The GFS cobalt occupies the top 25% as a solid color band with white GFS wordmark. The middle 50% is white with product-specific content. The bottom 25% is cobalt again with IBM Plex Mono text in white for regulatory information. A 3mm clear window is left for lot code and date printing post-application. Registration marks at four cardinal points for application alignment. Die-cut perforation line for tamper evidence. Minimum text size on shrink sleeves: 5pt (post-shrink size, not pre-shrink). All text and design must account for distortion in the shrink process — artwork must be pre-distorted on the flat art file so it reads correctly after application.
Pouch and Bag Design Template
Stand-up pouch and flat bag packaging specifications for shredded cheese, snack portions, and IQF vegetable products. Pouch Types: (1) Stand-up pouch with zipper reseal — for retail shredded cheese and snack items. Material: metallized PET/PE laminate, 3.5 mil total thickness. Sizes: 8oz (6x9in), 16oz (7.5x11.5in), 32oz (9x13in). (2) Pillow bag — for foodservice bulk cheese and frozen vegetables. Material: LLDPE, 2.5 mil. Sizes: 5lb (12x18in), 10lb (14x22in), 20lb (16x26in). Design layout: Top 30% is the GFS cobalt brand zone — logo lockup, product name in Inter 700, and key differentiator callout. Middle 50% is the product zone — product photography window (clear window on metallized background), weight statement, and count/portion information. Bottom 20% is the information zone — nutrition facts (side panel position), barcode, lot code area, and manufacturing/distribution statement. The zipper reseal area sits between the brand zone and product zone, printed with 'RESEAL AFTER OPENING' in IBM Plex Mono 8pt. Back panel: full nutrition facts, ingredient statement, allergen bold, storage instructions, and GFS contact information. For retail pouches, a shelf-ready display tray holds 12 units, printed in the GFS cobalt with product window cutout.
Label Material Specifications
Comprehensive guide to approved label materials for GFS packaging applications across temperature zones and surface types. Material 1 — Thermal Transfer (for variable data): material BOPP white, adhesive permanent acrylic, liner 40# SCK. Temperature range: -40F to +150F. Application: lot codes, date codes, serial numbers, variable weight labels. Printer compatibility: Zebra ZT411, SATO CL4NX. Ribbon: wax/resin hybrid. Material 2 — Pressure Sensitive (for pre-printed labels): material semi-gloss paper, adhesive deep freeze acrylic, liner 40# SCK. Temperature range: -65F to +200F. Application: product identification labels for frozen items. Print method: flexographic, 4-color process + 1 spot (cobalt). Material 3 — Direct Thermal (for shipping labels): material top-coated DT, adhesive all-temperature acrylic, liner 40# SCK. Temperature range: -20F to +150F. Application: shipping labels, pallet labels, receiving labels. Printer compatibility: Zebra ZD621. No ribbon required. Material 4 — Film Labels (for wet/condensation environments): material clear BOPP film, adhesive permanent acrylic with moisture resistance. Temperature range: -20F to +180F. Application: fresh dairy, produce, and items subject to condensation during cold-to-ambient transitions. All label materials undergo quarterly adhesion testing on actual product surfaces. Adhesion test method: 180-degree peel test per ASTM D3330 at both ambient and frozen conditions. Minimum peel strength: 25 oz/in at ambient, 15 oz/in at -18C.
Color Matching Guide for Packaging
Specifications for reproducing GFS brand colors accurately across different packaging substrates and print methods. The guide addresses the inherent challenge of maintaining consistent cobalt blue across paper labels, flexible film, corrugated board, and shrink sleeves. Cobalt Primary — Target: PMS 289C (coated), PMS 289U (uncoated). CMYK equivalent: C100 M80 Y20 K40. Hex reference: #092F64. Substrate adjustments: On kraft corrugated, increase cyan by 5% and reduce black by 5% to compensate for warm paper tone. On metallized film, reduce overall coverage by 10% as the reflective substrate intensifies perceived color. On BOPP film, standard CMYK values apply. On polystyrene foam trays, use flexo-specific formulation with adjusted ink viscosity. Tufts Blue Accent — Target: PMS 660C. CMYK: C65 M25 Y0 K0. Use only as secondary — never as background fill on packaging. Navy — Target: PMS 534C. CMYK: C100 M70 Y10 K50. Used for premium tier packaging only (leather goods, executive gift boxes). Proofing requirements: All packaging color proofs must be produced on the actual substrate material, not on coated proof paper. Digital proofs (soft proof) acceptable for layout approval only — never for color approval. Hard proof on substrate required before production run. Tolerance: Delta E of 2.0 or less from the approved master swatch. Master swatches maintained at GFS HQ and refreshed annually.
QR Code Placement Standards
Unified QR code placement and content standards for all GFS packaging, ensuring consistent scanability and brand presentation. QR Code Content: dynamic URL redirecting to product-specific landing page on globalfoodsolutions.co. URL structure: gfs.link/[product-code]-[lot-code]. Landing page displays: product specifications, certificate of analysis, origin traceability, temperature history (for shipments), and allergen information. QR Code Specifications: minimum size 15mm x 15mm (0.6in x 0.6in) on primary packaging, 20mm x 20mm on case labels, 25mm x 25mm on pallet labels. Error correction level: H (30% — highest, to accommodate potential damage). Quiet zone: minimum 4 modules on all sides (no text, graphics, or borders within the quiet zone). Color: cobalt #092F64 modules on white background. Never use the QR code on a cobalt or dark background — always ensure white backing. Placement Rules: Primary packaging — lower-right quadrant of the information panel, below the barcode. Case labels — adjacent to the GS1-128 barcode, separated by at least 10mm. Pallet labels — bottom-center, above the footer text. Marketing materials — adjacent to the product image, never overlapping it. A subtle 'SCAN FOR TRACE' label in IBM Plex Mono 7pt appears below the QR code in all applications. QR codes are generated dynamically at production time and linked to the lot-specific data in the GFS traceability system.
Packaging Sustainability Scorecard
Environmental impact assessment tool for evaluating and scoring GFS packaging configurations. The scorecard grades each packaging solution on six sustainability dimensions, producing a composite score from 0-100. Dimension 1 — Material Recyclability (0-20 points): Score based on the percentage of packaging material that is recyclable in standard municipal recycling programs. 20 points: 100% curbside recyclable. 15 points: recyclable but requires separation. 10 points: recyclable through specialty programs. 5 points: partially recyclable. 0 points: not recyclable. Dimension 2 — Recycled Content (0-15 points): Percentage of post-consumer recycled (PCR) material in the packaging. 15 points: >50% PCR. 10 points: 25-50% PCR. 5 points: 10-25% PCR. 0 points: <10% PCR. Dimension 3 — Material Reduction (0-15 points): Comparison to industry standard packaging weight for the same product category. Score based on percentage lighter than benchmark. Dimension 4 — Carbon Footprint (0-20 points): Lifecycle carbon assessment from raw material through disposal. Compared to category benchmark. Includes transportation impact based on supplier distance. Dimension 5 — Compostability (0-15 points): Whether the packaging is commercially or home compostable. Certified compostable (BPI, TUV) scores highest. Dimension 6 — Supply Chain Efficiency (0-15 points): Packaging design impact on logistics — cube utilization, case count per pallet, weight per unit. Higher efficiency means fewer trucks and less fuel. Current GFS packaging portfolio scores: Corrugated cases: 72/100 (strong recyclability, good PCR content). BOPP labels: 45/100 (limited recyclability but lightweight). Shrink sleeves: 38/100 (recyclability challenges, pursuing alternatives). Stand-up pouches: 42/100 (multi-layer laminate limits recycling). Target: achieve a portfolio-weighted average of 65/100 by 2027. Improvement roadmap includes transitioning to mono-material pouches, increasing PCR content in corrugated to 60%, and exploring paper-based shrink sleeve alternatives.
All supplementary guidelines follow the GFS Design System v10.0 standards. Updates require brand team approval. Document ID: GFS-2026-SUP.

Implementation Requirements
All packaging assets must be reviewed by the brand team before publication or distribution. Submit requests via the internal brand portal with a minimum 5 business day lead time. Rush requests require director-level approval and may incur additional production costs. Assets not conforming to these specifications will be rejected and returned for revision. Quality is non-negotiable at Global Food Solutions, and brand quality is a direct extension of product quality.
Version Control Protocol
Version numbering follows semantic versioning: Major.Minor.Patch. Major versions (1.0, 2.0) indicate fundamental redesigns. Minor versions (1.1, 1.2) indicate new assets or significant additions within the existing framework. Patch versions (1.1.1) indicate corrections, typo fixes, or minor adjustments. The current version 9.0 represents the ninth major iteration of the GFS Design System, reflecting the company's growth from a regional distributor to a national food supply intelligence platform. All previous versions are archived but not supported for new production. Migration to current version is mandatory for all active touchpoints within 90 days of release.
Compliance and Governance
Brand compliance is audited quarterly using the GFS Brand Scorecard methodology. Each department is scored on: correct logo usage (pass/fail), color accuracy (Delta E measurement), typography compliance (font and weight verification), template adherence (structural conformity), and overall brand impression (qualitative assessment). Departments achieving less than 85% compliance are required to complete a brand refresher training module within 14 days. Repeated non-compliance escalates to the CEO for corrective action. Brand compliance is a factor in the annual performance review for all managers with external-facing responsibilities.
