Scanning Distance Chart
| QR Code Size | Minimum Modules | Max Scan Distance | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15mm (0.6in) | 21 x 21 (V1) | ~15cm (6in) | Asset tags, small labels |
| 20mm (0.8in) | 25 x 25 (V2) | ~20cm (8in) | Business cards, shelf labels |
| 25mm (1.0in) | 29 x 29 (V3) | ~30cm (12in) | Packaging, badges |
| 40mm (1.6in) | 33 x 33 (V4) | ~50cm (20in) | Flyers, handouts |
| 60mm (2.4in) | 37 x 37 (V5) | ~80cm (31in) | Posters, presentations |
| 100mm (3.9in) | 41 x 41 (V6) | ~1.5m (5ft) | Banners, signage |
| 200mm (7.9in) | 45 x 45 (V7) | ~3m (10ft) | Large signage, vehicle wraps |
Rule of thumb: Scanning distance is roughly 10x the QR code width. A 2cm code scans at ~20cm. Always maintain a quiet zone (blank border) of at least 4 modules around the code. Never place QR codes on curved surfaces with a bend radius smaller than the code width.
■ All minimum sizes assume optimal lighting and a modern smartphone camera. Add 25% for outdoor or low-light environments.
